Fishing: Effective Fishing Lures

June 23, 2008 – 1:35 pm

A wise man once said the most effective fishing lures are the ones that catch the most fish. OK, so that smart alleck might have been my Uncle Joe, and he might have been trying to give me a hard time, but in reality that statement isnt too far from the truth. People have spent countless time and money trying to find the most effective fishing lures. But the truth is there is no magic answer.

Experimenting with Effective Fishing Lures
Any expert will tell you, you have to find the fishing lure that works for you. And it may not always be the same one every day. There are so many variables that factor in to catching fish. There is weather, time of day, time of year. You also have to take into consideration the gear youre using. How big is your rod and what weight is your line?

In the end, the most effective fishing lures Ive found are the ones that best create the illusion of being wounded baitfish. This has a lot to do with color. Brightly colored lures might look pretty in the store, but Ive found they have little to no effect on fish. Lures with a metallic finish, however, seem to resemble bait such as minnows or bass, however.

In addition to the color, its very important to find a lure that mimics the movement of a wounded fish. Ive found spoons to be perfect for this. They achieve a wobbling motion under water that it close to the movement a crippled baitfish might make. Not only does the movement lure to fish from up close, but the vibration is often felt from far distances, too.
