Fishing: Salmon Spoons
June 22, 2008 – 1:35 pmDuring both my trip to the Pacific Northwest, as well as my years of fishing on Lake Erie, Ive found salmon spoons to be the most effective lure when it comes to salmon fishing. Salmon fishing can be a day of fun and relaxation, as well as a night of delicious food. So, its important to have the correct tools.
Salmon spoons are often durable, high quality lures that have proven very successful over the years when it comes to attracting salmon. My favorite quality of the salmon spoons is the wobble. This motion creates the illusion of a wounded baitfish. If a salmon senses that a fish is easy prey, he will surely be lured to it. Not only is the wobble effective up close, but it attracts salmon from a distance, as well.
Salmon can only see about four or so feet in front of them. But they have what is known as lateral senses. This allows them to pick up on vibrations over distances. Thus, they can often sense the wounded fish long before they can even seem them. This allows you to attract more fish over a greater distance.
When to Use Salmon Spoons
The best time to fish for salmon is the hour before and after a tide change as well as the time during. This gives you a window of about three hours when salmon are most likely to come out to eat. If youre trolling for salmon, remember, salmon swim against the current so you want to troll with it. This way your salmon spoons are always on display to them.
